ALL DESERT GARDENS POTTERY IS DESIGNED IN ALBUQUERQUE,
NM, USA AND PRODUCED IN ZANESVILLE, OHIO ONE
OF THE ORIGINAL AREAS OF US POTTERY-MAKING.
When
I decided that new shapes would be a lot more fun
to plant than circles and squares, I had no idea how
difficult it would be have new shapes made. Just coming
up an 'uncontrived and useable' shape took a good
while.
Then
I had to find and hire a good mold-maker
- not an easy task. He then had to construct a model
of the planter, make sure the shape and size were
correct, and then build a mold from the new model.
The mold is then used by the potter to make the planter.
This process was repeated for each shape. Each of
these planters was custom made for Desert Gardens
and is specifically designed to be used for cactus
and succulents. Each planter sits on a raised rim
to keep the planter from ever standing in water. Large
drain holes are in each planter - not just in the
center - but in each end of the planter. The kidney-shape
planter has 3 holes, the mushroom has 4. The saucer
for each planter is made to fit the shape of the planter.
All
of the planters are about 5 inches tall to allow adequate
room for root growth and to prevent the need for frequent
replanting. I have found that these planters allow
one to actually plant a landscape featuring
differing sizes, shapes, textures and colors in a
planter that is deep enough to hold the plants for
years.
The
kidney-shaped planter is 12 inches long,
5 inches wide and 5 inches deep; the mushroom is 15
X 10 1/2 and 5 inches deep.
